The Grotto

We always hankered after a grotto for the garden, but did not really have the room, until we hit on the idea of a restricted space, half hidden behind two doors which we found in a local saleroom. They appear to be Moroccan and are supposed to be 18th century and are of extremely interesting construction. The framework of the grotto was constructed in breeze block and covered with thousands of mussel shells from Shell Island in North Wales, collected by our friend Bob Lydon, who then was living in nearby Llanbedr. The shelves of stone are supposed to drip with water, but we have not yet managed to find a sufficiently quiet motor to pump the water up to seven feet!
